how i sometimes find myself
five assemblages with golliwog dolls

this work is influenced by the plays of samuel beckett and my own memories and experiences. i purchased the golliwog dolls from ebay and one from a second hand store a few blocks from my home in portland. i placed them in familiar environments (pet carrier, desk drawer, keepsake box, tomato cage, heating duct) positing brown threads as their heart, mind, desires, protected areas, roots. in direct contrast to the caricatured pitch-black fabric of their skin.

please note: golliwog dolls and images were obtained from internet research. none were created by the artist. rather, i re-positioned these objects to reflect and refract our society and my experience in it.
