"It
becomes very sensitive when whites purchase something that is
meant for black people's hair, which has been mocked for so long,
" says damali ayo, the African-American creator of the popuylar
satirical Website Rent-a-Negro.com. Ms. ayo, a conceptual artist,
has made a name for herself exploring the often-tense relations
between the races. While digging into a plate of eggs at the Original
Hotcake House in Portland Ore. recently, seh found herself in
a stare-down with three white teenagers who loped in wearing doo
rags. The headwear, she says, has deeper cultural meaning than
say, a pair of Phat Farm Jeans "Black people weren't born
wearing baggy pants, but we were born with a 'fro."
